KITT (the Knight Industries Two Thousand) is the creation of Wilton Knight, a billionaire who founded both Knight Industries and the Foundation for Law and Government. KITT is the second vehicle recreated by them, after the prototype vehicle, KARR turned out to be too dangerous.
KITT is programmed to preserve human life. Specifically, that of his driver, Michael Knight.
He is not a weapon and does not have any weapons such as guns or missiles. He cannot willingly endanger human life. If his driver wished to do something that would endanger himself or others he would have to manually override KITT.
KITT has had to face off with his prototype, KARR. Michael engaged the other car in a game of chicken, and KARR plummeted off a cliff.
KITT is taken from early Season Three, right after Bonnie rejoined the Foundation. He has been working with Michael for two years at this point. He was nearly destroyed by a missile, and Bonnie had to revamp a lot of his features.
A year prior, KITT's cpu had been taken from Knight 2000, and he had to spend some time as a portable television set. This was not only a blow to his ego, but, it also caused him to reevaluate how he viewed who/what he was.
Character Personality: Please be as detailed as possible so that we have a good picture of the character. What makes this character tick? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Minimum three paragraphs.
KITT has an enormous, yet, easily bruised, ego. He believes he's the greatest thing since sliced bread, and technologically speaking, for his time, he's not wrong. He likes recognition for his accomplishments, and won't hesitate to prod people in order to get said recognition.
While he was programmed to protect the life of Michael Knight, and to get along with the man, KITT has his own definite preferences when it comes to just about everything. For example, he likes classical music, as opposed to Michael's rock and roll. His programming and personality is meant to compliment, not copy, that of his driver. Although, he does learn from Michael, and those around him, and this does shape his personality as time progresses. While he is programmed to protect Michael at the cost of his own safety (and he has taken a missile for his partner), his preference would be for solutions that keep them both unharmed.
KITT has expressed concerns about his own mortality on a few occasions. He has asked Michael if he thought it was possible he could cease to exist.
KITT can tend to be pedantic. He does not know when to stop talking about a topic or issue, which is one reason why he gets told to "shut up" so often by Michael. While this might momentarily cause him a bit of irritation from time to time, it's an effective way for people to save their ears and sanity. If someone happens to want details, KITT is their go-to. He will more than happily tell them everything he knows or has found out on a subject.
Despite being slightlyvery full of himself from time to time, KITT is a sweet soul. He has a soft spot for kids, practically being one himself in many ways. He likes dogs (so long as they don't use his tires as fire hydrants, thank you very much), and cares a great deal about his "family" at the Foundation.
Powers and Abilities: 'nuff said.
KITT is a technological marvel for the 1980s. The writers of Knight Rider included abilities that sometimes were only present for a single episode. Therefore, from his canon point, KITT has the following "important" abilities.
1. Microscanners, that are tiny audio and visual sensors embedded into the grooves of KITT's body. They allow for visual tracking and display of anything around the car.
2. KITT has a medical scanner that includes an electrocardiograph (ECG). The medical scanner can monitor the vital signs of individuals and display them on his monitors. It could indicate such conditions as if they were injured, poisoned, undergoing stress or other emotional behavior. KITT could even monitor Michael's physical activity through sensors inside the driver seat.
3. KITT can tint the windshield and windows to become opaque.
4. Surveillance Mode:
KITT could detect people and vehicles and track their movements and discern proximity.
KITT could gather structural schematics of buildings, vehicles, or other devices and help Michael avoid potential danger when he was snooping.
KITT could tap into computer systems to monitor, or upload and download information as long as he could break the access codes. (Obviously, this is not going to be the case with the Network in Nautilus.)
5. KITT is armored with "Tri-Helical Plasteel 1000 MBS" (Molecular Bonded Shell) plating which protects him from almost all forms of conventional firearms and explosive devices. He could only be harmed by heavy artillery and rockets, and even then, the blast usually left most of his body intact and only damaged internal components. The shell protected every part of the car including the tires. As a result, KITT's body is durable enough to act as a shield for explosives by driving over bombs to cover them and suppress the blast, ram through rigid barriers of strong material like cinder block walls or steel gates without suffering damage himself while damage to the car's structural integrity with its frequent long jumps on turbo boost is never an issue. The shell provided a frame tolerance of 223,000 lb (111.5 tons) and a front and rear axle suspension load of 57,000 lb (28.5 tons).
6. Turbo-boost. He can "jump" over objects such as other cars and through walls without being damaged.
7. Ski Mode. KITT can drive on two wheels.

[You are treated to an interior shot of KITT's cabin. It seems he's figured out how to use the new camera Nautilus has given him. While the shot includes the entire dash, it is probably easiest to focus on the voice modulator itself, right above the gull-wing steering wheel, as it flashes in cadence with KITT's voice.]
Excuse me. If it is not too much to ask, could someone kindly remove the cats that have taken up residence on my hood?
[The camera pans back a bit, giving everyone a view through the windshield, and sure enough, there are two cats napping happily on the hood of the sleek car.]
I've tried asking nicely, but, cats do not listen as well as dogs.
...also, they are leaving footprints, so, if someone could also direct me towards a car wash, I would sincerely appreciate it.
Third Person: 300 word minimum.
KITT didn't like to admit it, but, he was bored. Not only was he bored, but, he missed Michael, Bonnie, and Mr. Miles. He wasn't used to being alone with nothing to do and no one to talkand argue with. And as much as everyone had gone out of their way to reassure him that time was "frozen" back home, he couldn't help but worry about Michael and if he was staying out of trouble, and if he was eating those godawful cheeseburgers instead of nice healthy salads, and listening to his horrible music instead of good music that KITT had picked out.
This was a quiet night, as he rolled silently down the streets of Nautilus, idly scanning the area for anything interesting. KITT supposed he should be grateful for the break, but, he wanted something to do, and the majority of the structures in Nautilus were not built with cars in mind. So, his options for entertainment were limited.
He gave some consideration to putting a post out there on the Network, to see who was up at this hour, then rejected it, remembering how upset some humans got when their sleep cycles were disrupted. Bonnie never cared, but, Mr. Miles and Michael certainly did. KITT didn't have any desire to actively annoy the people in Nautilus.
Maybe he needed a job. Although, who would hire him and for what, he didn't know.
KITT stopped in the street, scanner flashing in agitation. Then, with an audible electronic sigh, he changed directions and headed for the beach. While saltwater wasn't the best thing in the world for his circuits, he could at least practice maneuverability. That would be an acceptable use of his time, and if nothing else he could complain to Michael when he finally showed up. Look what you made me do.
Because, Michael would show up. Eventually.
He always did.
